284. Bristol, Roger P.
Index of Printers, Publishers, And Booksellers Indicated by
Charles in his American Bibliography. Bibliographical Society of
the Univ. of Virginia, 1961. Reprinted Mansfield Centre, CT: Martino
Publishing, 2005. iv, 171 pp. Cloth. New. $60.
* This useful bibliography is a tool for use in conjunction with
Evans, American Bibliography. Bristol has provided an index
of printers, publishers, and booksellers to help navigate Evans when
author-title information is not clear, or not properly transcribed.
Bristol suggests that Evans made many attributions of author,
publisher, and place of publication which have been found to be poor
hunches. The index is an attempt to correct some of these errors.
Names of printers and publishers are brought together under place,
with no attempt to establish relationships or to differentiate
between the individuals of the same name. Bristol was involved in
updating Evans even further through supplements and indexes intended
to make the information provided in Evans more accurate and
accessible. This volume is scarce, no copies having appeared for
sale on line for the past year or so. Besterman 5196.
285. Cowley, John D.
A Bibliography of Abridgments, Digests, Dictionaries and Indexes of
English Law to the Year 1800.
London: Quaritch for the Selden Society, 1932. Reprint Mansfield
Center, CT: Martino Publishing, 2005. xcv, 196 pp. Illustrated.
Tables. Facsimiles. Cloth. New. $75.
* This bibliography aims to record as far as possible all printed
editions of abridgments, digests, dictionaries and indexes of
English law in general from the earliest times to the year 1800. It
also illustrates the development of the alphabetical system of
digesting. The work provides 330 descriptive entries and is divided
into four sections: I. Abridgments and Indexes of the Statutes; II.
Abridgments of Common Law & Equity; III. Common Law Indexes; IV.
Dictionaries & Legal Encyclopedias. Each section is preceded by a
thorough discussion of each type of work, as well as a discussion of
important books and authors for each. About one hundred pages are
devoted to the historical introduction. A quite extensive
bibliographical essay precedes the 330 descriptive entries. Indexed.

286. Gagarin, Michael and David Cohen, Editors.
The
Cambridge Companion to Ancient Greek Law.
Cambridge University Press, [2005]. xiii, 480 pp. Cloth. New. $85.
* Provides a comprehensive overview of the major themes and topics
pertinent to ancient Greek law. A substantial introduction
establishes the recent historiography on this topic and its
development over the last 30 years. Many of the 22 essays written by
an international team of experts, deal with procedural and
substantive law in classical Athens, but significant attention is
also paid to legal practice in the archaic and Hellenistic eras;
areas that offer substantial evidence for legal practice, such as
Crete and Egypt; the intersection of law with religion, philosophy,
political theory, rhetoric, and drama, as well as the unity of Greek
law and the role of writing in law. The volume is intended to
introduce non-specialists to the field as well as to stimulate new
thinking among specialists.
