Lex Mercatoria Rediviva; Or, A Complete Code of Commercial Law: Being a General Guide to All Men in Business; Whether as Traders, Remitters, Owners, Freighters, Captains, Insurers, Brokers, Factors, Supercargoes, or Agents. With an Account of Our Mercantile Companies; Our Colonies and Factories Abroad; Our Commercial Treaties with Foreign Powers; the Duty of Consuls, And of the Laws Concerning Aliens, Naturalization, and Denization. To Which Is Added, a Sketch of the Present State of the Commerce of the Whole World; Compiled from the works of the most celebrated British and Foreign Commercial Writers. Dublin: Printed for John Rice [et. al.], 1795. 2 Vols. Reprinted 2004 by The Lawbook Exchange.
* Reprint of the sixth edition. Considerably enlarged and improved by Thomas Mortimer. Beawes [fl. 1775] was a merchant and his book was intended to be “a guide to all men in business.” Nonetheless the Lex Mercatoria was often cited in court, and its authority formed the basis of several decisions. It was especially influential in the United States, where, according to Kent, it was considered “an authority in mercantile customs.”: Kent, Commentaries on American Law III:126.

146. Warren, Edward H. Spartan Education. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1942. xi, 164 pp. Reprinted 2005 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd.
* Warren [1873-1945], a former associate at Cadwallader and Stong, was a legendary professor at Harvard Law School. Known as “Bull” Warren for his manner in questioning students, he was the primary model for Professor Kingsfield in The Paper Chase. Spartan Education offers a fascinating account of Harvard Law School from the turn of the century to the 1940s, colorful sketches of his professors and Mr. Cadwallader and a summary of his “Spartan” approach to pedagogy. Warren also includes the texts of various addresses and articles dealing with Harvard, legal history, the American Bar and political topics. This is a reprint of the 1942 edition, which was strictly limited to 1000 copies. (Despite requests for additional copies Warren refused to reissue the book instead publishing an abridged edition.) Warren attended Harvard College from 1891 to 1895 and Harvard Law School from 1897 to 1900, where his principal instructors were Ames, Gray, Smith and Thayer. After four years at Strong and Cadwalader, he joined the Harvard Law faculty, where he remained until his retirement.
