This work was originally published in 1787 as a 56-page pamphlet entitled Observations on Government; Including Some Comments on Mr. Adams's Defense of the Constitution and Government of the United States of America. Ignored in America, it became an important influence on French debates about government during the first phase of the French Revolution in this version translated by Faure, who transformed it into a 291-page book with the addition of notes by Pierre S. DuPont de Nemours, Nicolas de Condorcet and J.A. Gauvain Gallors, a translation of the new U.S. Constitution and notes from Virginia's ratifying convention. Originally attributed to William Livingston, this work was written by Stevens, an engineer and inventor best known for his work on the development of the steamboat.
