"The advantage of such a compilation to the Barrister and the Attorney is manifest. The former sees at one view, without the trouble of turning over the voluminous reports of ages, all they contain on the subject of his enquiries: the latter hath the same advantage.... For understanding the practice of the court, the attorney should assist himself by every means he can;-for other questions that come before the court, he must apply for the information and assistance of the bar. This was the line that formerly separated the two parts of the profession from each other, and which, if gone into some disuse in these enlightened times, doth not always turn out to the advantage of the suitor" (Preface).
