This 1816 letter is addressed to Pierce Butler of South Carolina [1744-1822], a former U.S. senator, member of the Continental Congress and signer of the U.S. Constitution. It concerns a dispute over a legal title and gently reminds Butler that "papers were submitted to your examination in June 1811 & are at any time open to your inspection. The conveyance Wallis to McClane is recited in the Marshal's deed to you."
