Field, a leader of the New York Bar, was an important law reformer and the leading American proponent of codification during the nineteenth century. This pamphlet was "part of Field's campaign to urge the New York State Legislature to reform the judiciary system. His efforts led to his appointment later in 1847 as commissioner on practice and pleading and his participation in the preparation of the code of procedure (1848-1850)" (Cohen).
