Lieber [1800-1872], a German scholar and political activist who suffered persecution from the Prussians, was early associated with the historian Niebuhr. He became professor of history and political economy at South Carolina College, and was later appointed to the same chair in Columbia College. In 1865 he moved to Columbia Law School, where he became a prominent political philosopher and consultant to the Union government, due to his influential writings on military law.
