Spine worn through, covers detached. Small faint stamp to head of front cover, faint dampstaining to foot of text, interior otherwise clean. $50. * First edition. Through its power of eminent domain, New York City took cemetery land from the Brick Presbyterian Church that the city needed for street-widening. The church was given $28,000.00 as compensation. At issue was the disposition of the dead and the proper division of this money among the church, the vault owners and the heirs of the buried. In his report Ruggles presented a learned discussion of burial law and the history of burial practices. Ruggles was a notable New York Attorney and civic leader.
