Austin, December 18, 1936. 14-1/2" x 9" blue-backed legal-sized sheet, headed "Proclamation by the Governor of the State of Texas. Signed by Governor James V. Allred and Secretary of State B.P. Matocha, state seal affixed. Negligible wear, rust marks from staples and paper clips. $350. * Murphy, an African-American, was convicted of assault to rape in 1933. His pardon, which notes the several appeals for clemency sent on Murphy's behalf, refers specifically to a letter from District Attorney H.H. Wellborn, "who states he was never satisfied about this negro's case, that since his conviction certain things have come to light which leave him in doubt as to this negro's guilt, that if he is guilty he has been punished sufficiently, and that some of the best white citizens of his county are of the same opinion he is."
