First printed in 1594-1597, Hooker's influential work is concerned with the general principles involved in the Church of England's legal, political and social position. All early editions contain five books (though their title pages always claim to offer six). A seventh book was published in 1662. Many scholars doubt the authenticity of Books Six, Seven and Eight.
