On August 21, 1878, Walker shot Patrick Nolan. In the following year Walker was found guilty of first degree murder and sentenced to hang. On November 28, 1879, an enormous crowd witnessed the execution. According to a commemorative article in the Wayne County News (February 7, 1924), the execution had a carnival-like atmosphere and was the only civil execution to occur in Wayne County.
