The Ancient Revenue of the Crown Forster, Samuel. A Digest of All the Laws Relating to the Customs, To Trade, And Navigation; With a Short Historical Dissertation Concerning the Nature, Extent, And Method of Collection of the Ancient Revenue of the Crown. [London]: Printed by E. and R. Nutt, and R. Gosling (Assigns of Edward Sayer Esq;) for Geo. Strahan, 1727. [vi], 368 pp. Complete as issued. Octavo (7-1/2" x 5"). Contemporary calf, blind rules to boards, blind fillets along joints, raised bands to spine. Light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities with wear to spine ends and corners, boards beginning to separate, but secure, endleaves removed. Moderate toning to text, light foxing to a few leaves, light soiling to title page, early owner signatures to front pastedown, head of title page and verso of title page. Ex-library. Institution label to spine, stamps to front pastedown, title page and head of dedication leaf. A scarce title. $250. * Only edition. An interesting work for its attention to the legal principles underlying the crown's right to impose taxation and explanation of laws themselves, notably those applying to Great Britain's colonies. Our copy does not have the separately paginated appendix and index indicated in the ESTC. We found a copy identical to ours previously, however, and on OCLC. The collation of these copies is given in Sweet & Maxwell and Goldsmths'-Kress. This leads us to conclude that many copies were issued without the appendix and index. OCLC locates 5 copies in North American law libraries (Georgetown, Harvard, LA County Law Library, Library of Congress, University of Virginia). Goldsmiths'-Kress Library of Economic Literature (Supplement) 6506.2-1. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 1:327 (55). English Short-Title Catalogue T139479.
