Bishop of Lincoln, Chaplain to Charles I, Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford University and subject of a biography by Izaak Walton, Sanderson was one of the most eminent Englishmen of the seventeenth century. His opinions are also discussed in Walton's The Compleat Angler. De Juramento is a conservative review of the "nature and teaching" of oaths to royal and government officials according to Scripture. It was first published in 1647 as De Juramenti Promissorii. King Charles I held this work in high regard and he may have been the author of the English translation.
