Recent period-style quarter calf over cloth, raised bands, lettering piece and blind ornaments to spine, endpaper renewed. Light browning to text, minor edgewear a light soiling to endleaves, illegible later owner signature to front endleaf, small early owner initials to head of title page. A handsome copy. $950. * First edition. This was Kames's last major legal work. "As my intention is only to give examples of reasoning, free from the shackles of authority, I pretend not to say what our law actually is, but what it ought to be" (xiii). The leading Scottish jurist of his day and an important figure of the Scottish Enlightenment, he was an influence on David Hume, James Boswell and Adam Smith.
