Portrait of Francis Joseph Troubat, Oil on Canvas, Framed.

An Important Nineteenth-Century Pennsylvania Jurist [American School, 19th Century]. [Portrait of Francis Joseph Troubat]. Philadelphia?, c.1837. Image size 29" x 24-1/4" (73.6 x 61.6 cm). Oil on canvas, housed in its original, ornate nineteenth-century gilded wood frame. A small brass presentation plaque reading "Francis J. Troubat / Born 1802-Died 1868" is affixed to the upper header of the frame. The frame shows some minor nicks and chips, and the gilding is slightly dulled with an attractive age patina; the canvas and portrait itself remain remarkably clean and in fine condition. $4,500. A prolific and highly influential writer of early American legal texts, Francis Joseph Troubat (1802-1868) is best remembered as the co-author, alongside William W. Haly, of the monumental The Practice in Civil Actions and Proceedings... (1837). This definitive treatise served as the foundational roadmap for civil procedure across Pennsylvania and the federal courts for generations. This historic portrait boasts impeccable provenance, having long belonged to the Philadelphia Bar Association. Founded in 1802, it holds the distinction of being the oldest association of lawyers in the United States. The portrait was last displayed in the association's prestigious library, which was renamed the Theodore F. Jenkins Memorial Law Library in 1967. An exceptional piece of early 19th-century American portraiture connecting a foundational legal scholar to America's oldest legal institution.
