A Philadelphia Lawyer Who Served as Pennsylvania's Deputy Attorney General [American School, 19th Century]. [Portrait of Lewis Waln Smith]. Philadelphia, c.1870. Image size 30" x 24" (76.2 x 61 cm). Oil on canvas, housed in its original, ornate nineteenth-century gilded wood frame. The frame shows some minor nicks and chips with slightly dulled gilding consistent with age; the painting itself remains in fine condition. $1,500 * Lewis Waln Smith (1846-1881) was a prominent Philadelphia attorney who served with distinction as the Deputy Attorney General for the State of Pennsylvania. This historic portrait boasts an exceptional provenance, having long belonged to the Philadelphia Bar Association. Founded in 1802, it holds the distinction of being the oldest association of lawyers in the United States. The portrait was last displayed in the association's prestigious library, which was formally renamed the Theodore F. Jenkins Memorial Law Library in 1967. This piece represents a remarkable artifact of Pennsylvania's 19th-century legal and institutional history. In 2018 when the Jenkins Law Library moved to smaller quarters, the Philadelphia Bar Association decided that it was time the collection's paintings and sculptures find new, respectful and responsible owners and this portrait along with many others were sold at public auction. Oil on canvas in ornate nineteenth-century gilded wood frame. Some minor nicks and chips to frame, gilding slightly dulled, otherwise fine. $1,500. * Smith [1846-1881] was a lawyer who served as Deputy Attorney General for the State of Pennsylvania.
