[viii], 275, [21] pp. Folio (13-1/4" x 8-1/2"). Nineteenth-century three-quarter sheep over marbled boards, raised bands to spine. Rubbing and scuffing to boards, heavier rubbing to extremities with wear to spine ends and corners, front joint starting, hinges cracked, front free endpaper lacking, title page tipped-in to front pastedown, lightly edgeworn and partially detached at foot. Light browning to text, minor worming to lower margins of a few leaves below text, "Baron Gilbert" in early hand and two early owner signatures to title page, a few minor chips to its edges. $200. * Second edition. Gilbert's works were held in high regard by his contemporaries and such distinguished figured as Blackstone and Mansfield. As the Dictionary of National Biography notes, they "are marked by precision and lucidity of style, and very considerable mastery of [the] subject, and evince a real desire to exhibit it in a logical shape" (VII:1205).
