From January 1816 to [April 1865]. Albany: William Gould, 1818-1865. 42 books. Eight linear feet of shelf space. Early 20th-century tan cloth with upper and lower black spine labels. Worn, many labels chipped, internally sound. $950. * This set had four interesting previous owners. One of the title-pages has the ownership ink stamp of the late nineteenth-century New York lawyer William Augustus Ogden Hegeman (1841-1888). The title-page of volume 4 has the inscription of Eleazer Morton Swift (1790-1859), who served as District Attorney for Dutchess County, New York. The title-page of volume 5 has the ownership inscription of William W. Van Wagenen, A.B., A.M. (fl. 1815-1856), prominent New York lawyer and graduate of Columbia College (later Columbia University). Below Wagenen's inscription, a later owner has signed as "S. V. Hoffman". This is Samuel Verplanck Hoffman (1866-1942), eminent collector, antiquarian, land-estate manager, philanthropist, prominent astronomer, and President of the New York Historical Society. (The Swift and Hoffman inscriptions are struck-through but wholly legible.).
