The inscription reads: "For/ Arthur Schlesinger,/ with the warm regards of/ FF/ May 15, 1937." Schlesinger [1888-1965] was an influential professor of American history and Progressive Era intellectual who taught at Harvard University for three decades. As an author, teacher and director of Ph.D dissertations, he played a leading role in the establishment of social and women's history.
