This and other books did much to establish Holmes's posthumous reputation. Alfred North Whitehead [1861-1947] was one of the leading mathematicians and philosophers of the 20th century and a member of the Harvard faculty from 1924 to 1937. He and his wife were part of Frankfurter's social circle at Harvard, along with such faculty luminaries as Josef Schumpeter and Arthur Schlesinger, Sr.
