The inscription reads: "Mrs Fairfax Harrison/ from her friend & servant/ O W Holmes/ February 28. 1905." Mrs. Harrison was born Hetty Cary. Her husband, from a distinguished Virginia family, was a lawyer, businessman and author of books on thoroughbred horses, agriculture and Virginia history. He was an executive with the Southern Railway Company and its president from 1913 to 1937.
