Diplomatic relations between the United States and Sweden began during the Revolutionary War when Swedish diplomats approached Benjamin Franklin in Paris. Sweden was officially a neutral party (although England had previously infringed on that neutrality), so negotiations were kept secret until the official end of the war. The resulting treaty with Sweden was a major diplomatic success for the young republic. OCLC locates 3 copies published in 1783, but these are ghosts.
