[Autograph Letter, Signed, On Supreme Court Letterhead, From Louis Brandeis to Emanuel Celler, Chatham, Massachusetts, August 29, 1935]. 6-3/4" x 4-1/2" bifolium, U.S. Supreme Court letterhead, "Washington, D.C." crossed out by Brandeis and replaced with "Chatham, Mass." Light toning, single horizontal fold, light soiling along fold line, a few light stains and a small flaw to verso of second leaf. Content to recto of first leaf, "Personal" written at head. $450. * Celler was a Democratic Congressional representative from New York best known for his strong support for Jewish refugees fleeing Europe during World War II and his involvement in drafting and passing major civil rights legislation after the war. All of Celler's grandparents were German immigrants, which likely influenced his views on immigration rights. In this letter, Brandeis thanks him for sending a report, likely related to Celler's pre-war immigration advocacy in Congress.
