Contemporary paneled pigskin, 1595 stamped to foot of front board, raised bands to spine, bronze clasps. Light rubbing and spotting to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities with wear to corners, some darkening to spine, minor worming near head, two early owner inscriptions to front pastedown, one dated 1656, another to foot of title page of Stimuli Virtutum. Moderate toning, light browning and foxing in places. Brief early annotations to some passages in Brevis Instructio. $1,500. * Brevis Instructio: first edition in Latin, second edition overall; Stimuli Virtutum: later edition, the second in Latin. The Brevis Instructio is a pocket manual to provide spiritual comfort, strength and guidance to those who are dying, especially those who are awaiting execution. It was first published in Italian around 1586. The title page identifies Isella as a canon of Liege Cathedral. Stimuli Virtutum is a popular work for the edification of youth. The work has been attributed to Auber Le Mire and Bernardino Rossignoli. Some sources propose that Baldesano is a pseudonym for Rossignoli.
