With Historical and Critical Remarks. Edinburgh: Printed for the Author; by William Smellie, 1785. xxiii, [1], 400 pp. Additional leaf of "Subscribers Omitted" inserted between pp. xiv and xv. Quarto (10-1/2" x 8-1/4"). Contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled boards, blind fillets to calf edges, raised bands, gilt fillets, blind stamping and lettering piece to spine, marbled edges. Light rubbing and a few scuffs, nicks and scratches to boards, moderate rubbing and light wear to extremities, including corners, which are bumped, front hinge cracked, rear hinge starting at head, slight offsetting to endleaves. Light toning, occasional light foxing, light soiling in a few places, small tear to bottom edge of leaf Aa4 (pp. 191-192) without loss. $750. * First edition. According to Walker, Arnot's work contains the only accounts of many trials otherwise unknown. Contents include chapters on treason, murder, piracy, forgery, incest, adultery, blasphemy, witchcraft and crimes against religion and the state among others.
