This work was a response to the cases of treason that followed the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 and a defense of treason legislation introduced by Yorke's father, the Earl of Hardwicke, who was then lord chancellor. Going beyond the common law, Yorke draws on examples from Athenian, Roman, Jewish and feudal sources. The final edition of this book, the fourth, was published in 1795. All editions are scarce.
