Volume I has a general half-title page and a subscriber list. Large folio (16" x 10-1/2"). Contemporary calf with later rebacking, blind rules to boards, red and black lettering pieces, gilt-edged raised bands and gilt ornaments to spines, existing marbled endpapers retained, gilt tooling to board edges, gilt inside dentelles, Volume III has a later calf rear board with gilt rules and plain rear endpapers. Light rubbing and some minor nicks, scuffs and stains to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities with some wear to spine ends and corners, front joint of Volume I partially cracked, most hinges cracked or starting, later owner bookplates of Ragley Hall to front pastedowns. Title pages printed in red and black, small text illustrations, five woodcut, one copperplate, in the appendix in Volume IV. Light toning to interiors, occasional light soiling to upper margins, light foxing to a few leaves. An impressive set. $850. * Only edition. A professor of Arabic at Cambridge University and librarian to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Wilkins was an important archivist and historian of early English legal, political and ecclesistical institutions. According to Douglas, the Concilia, a massive collection of original source material and scholarship by Spelman, Wake and others, is "the greatest single work which has ever been produced on the medieval English Church." The English Short-Title Catalogue notes that 500 copies of this work were printed. Located near Stratford-Upon-Avon, Ragley Hall is the ancestral seat of the Marquess of Hertford.
