Lambert and his co-defendant Perry were journalists with the Morning Chronicle, of which Perry was the editor. The Whig-leaning Chronicle had regular brushes with the conservative government. In 1798, Perry had served three months in Newgate for libeling the House of Lords. On this occasion, he and Lambert were charged with libel after copying a paragraph criticizing the prince regent from another newspaper. Our account documents the trial and subsequent acquittal, including the remarkably evenhanded summing-up by Lord Ellenborough. It is prefaced by a powerful essay by Perry on the rights of the English press, which details an "obnoxious resolution" in the House of Commons which would have further curtailed press freedom had it passed.
