Scots radical Thomas Muir, an advocate, was an ardent supporter of the American and French Revolutions and a proponent of comprehensive parliamentary reform in Great Britain. His activities in Great Britain and France eventually led to a highly politicized trial on sedition charges in 1793. In the end Muir was found guilty of distributing and promoting Thomas Paine's The Rights of Man. He was sentenced to fourteen years transportation to the Australian penal colony of Botany Bay. He had a remarkable escape, but his health was ruined and he died soon afterwards.
