(The index is undated.) General title page dated 1837. Quarto (10-1/2" x 8-1/4"). Contemporary calf over patterned cloth, blind fillets to calf edges, rebacked retaining parts of existing spine with gilt-edged raised bands and lettering piece, edges speckled blue, endpapers renewed. A few nicks and small scratches to front board, light rubbing to board edges, corners bumped and worn, retained binder's ticket and armorial bookplate (of George Kellie McCallum) to front pastedown, later note to front endleaf (a brief biography of David Laing). Light toning to interior, light foxing in a few places, internally clean. An appealing volume. $950. * With an index and a list of library rules and regulations. The Society of Writers to Her Majesty's Signet is a private organization of Scottish solicitors dating back to 1594. Documented here near its peak, the Society's library was among the finest private libraries in Great Britain. Most of the library was sold at auction in 1960, though the building is still maintained by the Society as a historical site.
