Contemporary paneled calf with gilt rules and corner fleurons to boards, rebacked retaining parts of existing gilt spine with raised bands and renewed lettering piece, blind tooling to board edges, edges speckled red. Light rubbing to boards, a few scuffs, nicks, scratches, minor worming to front board, small faint dampstains to rear board, moderate to board edges, corners bumped and somewhat worn, hinges cracked, light offsetting and faint dampstaining to preliminaries, front free endpaper detaching at head but secure. Moderate toning to interior, small faint dampstain to upper gutter of text block not affecting text, light foxing and soiling in a few places, small hole to text block of leaf F2 (pp. 23-24) of abstracts volume not affecting legibility. Among the public acts is the first printing of "An act for the better securing and encouraging the trade of his Majesty's sugar colonies in America," commonly known as the Molasses Act of 1733. Proposed by Sir Robert Walpole to appease wealthy plantation owners in the British West Indies, the act imposed a tax on impor.
