The Bairds testified that he had experienced violent fits in the weeks leading up to the murder, though he was well-known and respected in the community before these incidents. The jury returned a guilty verdict, but recommended mercy in light of questions of Van Arsdale's sanity, and many members of the community agreed. Despite this, he was sentenced to death, but the New Jersey Court of Pardons commuted his sentence to life in prison.
