M'Lachlan was tried in Glasgow, 1862, for the murder of Jessie M'Pherson (Richardson), a fellow servant in the house of Glasgow accountant John Fleming. She was found guilty and sentenced to death, but this sentence was later commuted to life in prison after irregularities were noted in the trial.
