Account Book of a Nineteenth-Century JP and Selectman from A Small Town in Maine [Manuscript]. [Hopkins, Robert]. [Account Book]. Surry, ME, 1837-1865. [160] pp. Quarto (7-1/2" x 6-1/4"). Quarter sheep over marbled boards, blind fillets to spine. Light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, hinges cracked, free endpapers lacking. Moderate toning to interior, faint dampstaining in a few places, content in fine neat hand to 27 leaves, 8 laid-in slips in same hand. $450. * This ledger records the daily practice of the local justice of the peace, notary and, for a time, a local selectman, in Surry, Maine, a small town, then and today, on the coast near Mount Desert Island. Like many ledgers of its kind, this one offers a fascinating perspective on the economic and social life of the community Hopkins served. A curious feature: Hopkins recorded the daily weather for parts of January and February 1854 on the front endleaves.
