[xxiv], 416, [24] pp. With a section titled Precedents Containing the Forms of Challenges to the Array, &c., which has a title page, pagination continuous. Final leaf is a publisher catalogue. Octavo (7-1/2" x 4-1/2"). Contemporary calf, blind rules to boards, blind fillets along joints, raised bands and blind filets to spine, gilt tooling to board edges. Light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, small chip to front joint near head of spine, joints just starting near head, corners bumped and somewhat worn, hinges cracked, later inscription (by Donald Andrus, dated 1888) to front pastedown, lower corner lacking from front endleaf. Light toning to interior, top edge trimmed with loss to headlines in a few places, negligible faint dampstaining to preliminaries and final few leaves of text. $500. * Fourth (stated) edition. First published anonymously in 1665, Tryals per Pais is the first substantial English treatise on juries and the law of evidence. A work of authority for more than a century, it went through several editions, the final appearing in 1793. This work is sometimes attributed erroneously to Samson Euer.
