The inscription reads: "To Gene Zuckert-/ who has conquered many/ a 'mountain' on his own-/ with admiration and/ affection/ Wm O Douglas/ August 28, 1950." Mountaineering in the Pacific Northwest was one of Douglas' favorite pursuits since childhood. More than a pastime, it offered him unrivalled opportunities to "find deep solitude; and under conditions of grandeur that are startling...come to know both himself and God" (ix). Zuckert [1911-2000], a former student and protege of Douglas, was secretary of the Air Force from 1961 to 1965, a position he served with distinction.
