An important figure in Scottish law and letters, Dalrymple, Lord Hailes, 3rd Baronet of Hailes, was an advocate, judge and historian. The present work is one of the earliest comprehensive biographies of the members of the Court of Session. It was revised and expanded twice, in 1794 and 1798. The annotations and corrections to our copy, mostly to the Catalogue, both follow the pasted-in errata slip and add some 39 names from 1775-1816. OCLC locates 4 copies of the first edition in law libraries (Harvard, Yale, University of Cincinnati, University of Virginia). English Short-Title Catalogue T117992.
