Code Civil Conforme a l'Edition Originale, Heavily Annotated, 1828.

Copy of the Code Napoleon Extensively Annotated Around 1828 by a Law Student [Code Napoleon]. [Code Civil Conforme a l'Edition Originale. Nouvelle Edition, Imprimee a Mi-Marge, Augmentee de la Concordance des Articles des Codes Entre Eux (...) et de la Charte Constitutionnelle. A l'Usage des Etudians en Droit et de Toux Ceux qui Desirent Annoter le Code]. [Paris: B. et G. Waree Freres, 1828]. 320, xvi pp. A wide-margined copy. Quarto (10-1/4" x 8-1/2"). Contemporary quarter sheep over marbled boards, gilt title (Code Civil) and fillets to spine, marbled endpapers, untrimmed edges. Light rubbing and a few minor scratches and scuffs to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities and spine with some wear to spine ends and corners, which are lightly bumped, hinges cracked, "M. Semelet/ Etud[ient] de Droit/ Rue Dauphine 20" to half-title. Light toning to interior, light foxing in a few places, some edgewear to first and final leaves of text block, burn holes at gutter to final four leaves, margins of most leaves filled with annotations in small neat hand. $2,500. * As noted in the title, this wide-margined edition was intended to be annotated by "Etudians en Droit et de Toux Ceux qui Desirent Annoter le Code." M. Semelet was a serious student. His annotations are lengthy, detailed and analytical. Several are clafications of terms or discussions of historical background. Semelet modified this copy by removing some of its parts. It lacks the title page, the tables, which outline the books of the Code, the index and the text of the Charte Constitutionnelle, the constitution issued by Louis XVIII in 1814 that remained in effect until 1848. Overall, this copy offers a fascinating record of a Parisian law student's engagememt with the fundamental text of modern French law during the middle years of the Bourbon restoration.
