Townsend, For Seduction. London: Published by J. Johnston, [1817?]. 20 pp. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5-1/4"). Disbound stab-stitched pamphlet. Phillips was an Irish barrister notable for his courtroom oratory. He argued many prominent cases, primarily adultery and seduction trials. The present case, Creighton v. Townsend, concerned an affair between a sixteen-year-old Irish girl and Townsend, an English soldier. When the girl ran away with him, her father sued. Phillips was the lead counsel for the plaintiff and secured ?750 in damages. His speeches were often published separately, and several accounts of the present trial appear to have circulated. A possible second edition of ours may have appeared later the same year, though it is unclear where that copy is held or what distinguishes it from the first edition. OCLC and Library Hub locate no copies of the first edition.
