Manuscript Brief on a Copyhold Case with the Opinion of Sir John Holt.

Sir John Holt's Opinion Regarding a Disputed Estate [Manuscript]. [Holt, Sir John (1642-1710)]. [Manuscript Brief on a Copyhold Case with the Opinion of Sir John Holt]. [London?, c.1700]. 12" x 7-1/2" bifolium, text in a single neat hand to recto of first leaf and docket to verso of final leaf. Moderate toning, light soiling in places, horizontal fold lines with very light wear and a few small holes and clean tears along them, main horizontal fold reinforced with archival tape, later seller description and small portrait of Holt tipped onto left edge, portrait partially obscuring text without loss. $450. * This manuscript appears to concern a copyhold case heard by Holt when he was Lord Chief Justice. The case seemingly involved a dispute over the inheritance of an estate on which one of the parties had already agreed to pay death duties. The first part is a brief abstract of the case, and the second part summarizes the key questions arising from the facts, including a sentence followed by "J. Holt" (not Holt's autograph signature). It is possible that the manuscript is a scribal copy of an original brief signed by Holt and that the copy was filed for reference. It may also have been produced by a practitioner reviewing the case at a later date, with the abstract copied or digested from a reporter, though it is unclear from our research which specific case our manuscript describes.
