Antiquities of the Inns of Court and Chancery; Containing Historical and Descriptive Sketches Relative to Their Original Foundation, Customs, Ceremonies, Buildings, Government, &c. &c. With a Concise History of the English Law. London: Printed for Vernor and Hood; J. Storer and J. Greig, 1804. xii, 377, [10] pp. 24 steel-plate engravings. Large-paper copy. Complete. Quarto (10-1/2" x 8"). Nineteenth-century, three-quarter morocco over marbled boards, gilt rules to corners, blind fillets along joints, gilt spine with raised bands, gilt edges, marbled endpapers. Negligible light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, early owner signature (Susanna Georgiana Lloyd, dated 1846) to verso of front free endpaper, hinges starting. Moderate toning to interior, light foxing to plates and a few leaves, light offsetting from plates. $200. * First edition. Herbert was the librarian of the Guildhall Library. Most of his Antiquities was taken from Sir William Dugdale's Origines Juridicales (1666). The engravings depict the exteriors and interiors of the Inns of Court and Chancery.
