[ix], 310 pp. Cloth in dust jacket, light edgewear to extremities, a few negligible tiny spots, chip to head of spine, chip and short tear to top of rear panel, which is lightly soiled. Light toning to interior, faint spotting to endleaves, presentation inscription from Frankfurter to front free endpaper. $500. * First edition, fifth printing. The inscription reads: "For Professor W.R. Poole, Q.C. to/ whom I am privileged to inscribe/ this through the kind office of our/ common friend Leonard/ Brockingham, Q.C./ with the good wishes of/ Felix Frankfurter/ Nov. 17, 1964." This incisive and fascinating memoir was transcribed from a series of interviews with Phillips conducted for the Columbia University Oral History Research Department. The only commercially published oral history conducted with a United States Supreme Court justice, it traces his life, career and his thoughts on such topics as religion and the function of judges. William R. Poole [1918-2014] was a distinguished Canadian lawyer, law professor and bibliophile.
