Pritchard was accused of poisoning his wife and several other females over a period of years. He was convicted of murdering his wife and mother-in-law and sentenced to be hanged. While awaiting execution he confessed to the murders. His execution was the last public hanging in Scotland, and was witnessed by 100,000 people.
