Nineteenth-century three-quarter calf over marbled boards, central gilt arms (of George Frederick Russell Colt) to boards, blind fillets to calf edges, gilt-edged raised bands, lettering piece and gilt ornaments to spine, endpapers renewed, edges speckled green and red. Light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, joints just starting at ends, faint offsetting to free endpapers. Light toning to interior, light foxing and soiling in a few places, faint dampstain to lower right corner of last ten or so leaves, brief pencil notations to foot of p. 241 and final page. A nice copy. $1,250. * Only edition. This title is of interest not only for its detailed calculations, but also as a comprehensive guide to the government job market at the time, marked by the casual exchange of potentially lucrative civil service posts in exchange for money or favors. Though An Estimate of Places for Life does not go so far as to codify this unofficial system, it does explain in detail the potential return on investment for annual salaries of various government positions. It would have been essential reading for.
