The Quartering Act of 1774 authorized colonial governors, rather than legislatures, to house British soldiers in any unoccupied building if deemed necessary. The subsequent Mutiny in America Act extended the practice of quartering to British marine forces and clarified in detail when and how the governor could commandeer property and what the consequences could be for recalcitrant colonists. Like other acts, it also imposed additional costs of British military upkeep on the colonies. The act was put into effect from March 24, 1775; the first battles of the Revolutionary War would be fought less than a month later on April 19. Acts "for punishing mutiny and desertion" were passed annually from 1689 to 1879, and were often supplemented by additional mutiny acts governing specific areas of the British Empire in response to local disturbances. Mutiny acts were passed for the American colonies between 1765 and 1776, beginning with the first Quartering Act. In general, acts were compiled over the course of a Parliamentary session and bound afterwards. They were issued with general title pages, which were often discarded; the title page is present in the issue offered here. English Short-Title Catalogue N57538.
