Contemporary sheep, blind rules to boards, blind fillets and (likely eighteenth-century) lettering piece to spine. Light rubbing, minor worming and a few minor stains to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities with some wear to spine ends and corners, front pastedown loose. Moderate toning to interior, creases and light edgewear to final six leaves, faint dampstaining and edgewear to front endleaves, early annotations to front pastedown, early struck-through signature to head of title page, which is lightly soiled. $1,250. * First edition. The first treatise on English charitable law, it examines the pioneering late-Elizabethan statute that governed the poor law's legal framework for centuries. A second edition was published in 1663. Thomas Jefferson owned a copy of the first edition. Both editions are scarce.
