Recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, raised bands, lettering piece, blind fillets and gilt publication date to spine, early hand-lettered title to fore-edge of text block, endpapers renewed. A few minor nicks to spine, light rubbing to corners. Moderate toning to interior, light foxing in a few places, faint dampstaining to lower margins of preliminaries, early owner signature (William Bryant, dated 1788) to verso of advertising leaf. $500. * Second edition. One of the most thorough books of its kind, and one of the earliest, the aptly-titled Compleat Sheriff was held in high regard by Holdsworth. Notably descriptive, it also includes citations of legal cases, bibliographical references, chapters on juries and habeas corpus and a detailed discussion of the law of escapes. A useful and long-lived work, it was first published in 1696. This edition was reissued in 1710 with a cancel title page; it was followed by f.
