Founded in 1781, the Massachusetts Medical Society played a leading role in the professionalization of American medicine. This process entailed the discrediting of alternative--some would say rival--medical systems. Homeopathy was one of them. This hearing led to the dismissal of several doctors who incorporated homeopathic methods into their practice. The Society's efforts helped to marginalize homeopathy in the United States; the last school of homeopathic medicine closed in 1920. However, homeopathy began to enjoy a revival in the 1990s and the medical establishment has begun to incorporate some of its practices.
