Basel: Per Eusebium Episcopium & Nicolai Fratris Haeredes, 1583. [xii], 2396 [i.e. 2398] pp. Main text in parallel columns. Folio (13" x 8-1/2"). Contemporary paneled pigskin with elaborate blind tooling, raised bands, hand-lettered title and early shelf label to spine, remnants of silk ribbon ties to board edges, edges of text block rouged. Some soiling, a few minor stains and wormholes, moderate rubbing to extremities, small hole to head of front joint, rear joint just starting at foot, corners bumped and somewhat worn, boards slightly bowed, front hinge partially cracked, later bookplate (of W.A. Baillie-Grohman) to front pastedown, early owner initials ("D" and "D.W.") to front pastedown and front free endpaper, hand-lettered ownership label (of Leopold Schluderpacher) to title page. Moderate toning to interior, light foxing and soiling in a few places, slightly impacting legibility on p. 1489, faint dampstaining to margins of a few leaves. $1,500. * First edition. Schard was a humanist publisher, writer and lawyer. A practical work, his dictionary is derived mostly from a variety of earlier dictionaries, which are listed at the beginning of the text. Some of the definitions are detailed and long, but most are concise. All are notable for their clarity and lucid prose. William Adolph Baillie-Grohman [1851-1921], one of the former owners of our volume, was an Anglo-Austrian author, sportsman and collector. A fairly successful work, it went through three more editions in 1593, 1600 and 1616. All are scarce.
