Original orange publisher's cloth, gilt title and author name and blind-stamped portrait medallion to front board. Negligible light rubbing and shelfwear, hinges cracked, annotation to front free endpaper, moderate toning, internally clean. Additional presentation leaf inserted before frontis with fascimile signatures of Alvin G. Weeks and Alexander Gilmore, presentation line completed in ink with "The Honorable Oliver Wendell Holmes, Esquire." $150. * A remembrance of Massasoit [c.1851-1661], the sachem of the Wampanoag confederacy whose diplomatic alliance with the Plymouth Colony saved the colonists from starvation and attack during the colony's early years. This copy was presented to Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. [1841-1935]; presentation copies of the volume were given to contributors "to the fund for the erection at Plymouth, Massachusetts, of a memorial to Massasoit." The ink annotation to the front free endpaper reads "Oliver Wendell Holmes" but is not Holmes's signature.
